A Lakeland Community Heritage Project initiative

Residents of Lakeland, a 130-year-old African American community in Prince George's County, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC, have worked for more than 10 years to document, preserve, and share their cultural heritage. Their ambition has been to capture a history that covers African American life in the long 20th century, including segregation, suburbanization, education, and urban renewal as well as civic associations, politics, activism, and other forms of cultural heritage—and to do so with traditional research sources and in their own voices as community members.
